I am the same complexion as Kelly and around the same age. For the life of me I can’t understand where this color hate comes from in the black community. I was raised in a low-income black neighborhood and I can’t recall ever going through this “color insecurity” in fact, the shade of my skin never even came into my mind. The desire of wanting to be lighter is just a foreign concept to me and I never even heard of it until a few years ago. I don’t recall any of my friends being the same way either. Who puts these thoughts in their heads? This is just so mind-boggling to me because it’s something so petty it’s not even worth the bubbling of brain cells over it.
Kelly you’re gorgeous SHUTUP!! Thank god Beyonce’s Mom was there to knock some sense into your head.
I’m not saying I have the highest self-esteem in the world, but if I’m going to lose sleep over something, the color of which I am is certainly not one of them and definitely not something I’m going to lose sleep at night over. Even in the Caribbean, Africa and even India, more so women than men, try to bleach their skin to become lighter with creams and soaps! I for one find it all hilarious. I mean come on, we can all find something about ourselves to be more, less or “-er” of; bigger butt, bigger breasts, smaller eyes, longer hair, tall-er, short-er, thinn-er but is it really worth beating your esteem down over it? Hell no. It’s so trivial. People are never happy with themselves because they are so busy comparing theirselves to everyone else around them. Even if you could achieve being lighter, you’d just find something else to complain about; smaller nose, higher cheekbones, slanted eyes, fuller lips and then the ending result is this …
So lesson to be learned is stop with the self-loathing already, many if not most people wish they were in someone else’s skin. While you’re so busy wishing that you were someone else, someone else is wishing they were you.
